Services for Students
International Students
Your advantages: Applicants should be aware of the
advantages they offer prospective employers.
- Language skills - ability to converse and
do business in English and home language.
- Economical - Particularly in Malaysia and Indonesia but also in Singapore
a home student with an Australian education, though equally valuable as an
Australian sent overseas, will be considerably cheaper. Even if you are paid
A$50,000 a year this compares favourably with the A$150,000 an ex-pat may
cost.
- Australian Tertiary Education - your degree will be especially valuable
for Australian companies working in the region but other western companies
will also appreciate the qualification.
Useful Contacts And Ideas
- Track down company addresses by contacting companies likely to have
a presence in the region and ask for a copy of their annual report. These
usually list overseas offices.
- Read national and international newspapers and follow up any leads about
companies operating in the region. Send in your CV and make a follow up phone
call.
- Use Austrade (www.austrade.gov.au).The
government organisation that publishes directories of Australian companies
operating overseas. Separate directories are published for countries such
as Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. The Austrade Web site also contains
a lot of background information as well. Bi-Lateral.
- Use business groups such as The Australia Indonesia Business Council (http://www.aibc.net.au/).
You can usually subscribe to such groups as an individual, receiving newsletters
and networking opportunities. Events usually attract senior managers - and
very few international students. Other groups such as The American Chamber
of Commerce may also be worth contacting.
- Join Asialink. A Melbourne based dynamic organisation of young
professionals and tertiary students representing key organisation within the
business, educational and cultural communities across Australia and Asia.
